Is Alzheimer’s a disease? YES, but it’s not a disease like the flu or a virus. It’s not something air-born that you catch. Alzheimer’s dementia is a cognitive malfunctioning of the brain that follows a path. That path begins when we’re younger and continues throughout life. Unfortunately,a lack of knowledge and understanding has pushed us down a path as we age that’s led to poor brain health, a brain that doesn’t function as effectively as it could, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s dementia.
Until recently we were led to believe that our brain was a fixed, genetic inheritance and we had to make the best of it. NOT TRUE! The internal structure of your brain is constantly changing, along with its capabilities, in response to what you do and don’t do.
Until recently we were led to believe that our brain is a passive receiver and distributor of information. NOT TRUE! As the control center of your Brain, Mind, Body system your brain is an active user of the information it receives.
Until recently we believed that we stopped generating experience-dependent brain cells in our early twenty’s and that by our early thirties our brain was in decline. NOT TRUE! Experience-dependent brain cells allow us to absorb new information, make new memories and learn. We can continue to generate experience-dependent brain cells throughout life. We can continue to absorb new information, make new memories and learn throughout life. Aging doesn’t cause cognitive decline.
All of this has led us to believe that only older adults need to be concerned about cognitive health. NOT TRUE! People of all ages need to be concerned about the health and functioning abiity of their brain. The path that we’ve been on has started when we were young and progressed through old age. We’ve taken our brain for granted and ignored it’s needs. As a result, we’ve continued to go through life with a brain that gets less and less healthy. We blame age, but it’s not age. IT’S A BRAIN THAT CAN’T FUNCTION AS EFFECTIVELY AS IT ONCE DID BECAUSE IT’S NOT AS HEALTHY AS IT ONCE WAS. The decline is gradual which is why age is blamed.
THE GOOD NEWS IS:
YOUR BRAIN IS RESILIENT AND CAN BE RESTORED TO GOOD HEALTH AT ANY AGE. YOU JUST NEED TO STOP THE DAMAGE DOING AND PROVIDE YOUR BRAIN WITH THE THINGS IT NEEDS TO RESTORE ITS HEALTH AND FUNCTIONING EFFECTIVENESS.
You need to continue learning throughout life, stay physically active and socially involved, make sure you’re properly hydrated, eat the right foods, continue to achieve throughout life (even little things make a difference) and get a good nights sleep. These things work for all ages and we need to pay attention to them regardless of our age.
